Volunteer Opportunities with OAR

OAR invites you to help us develop not only the Big Bend Gulf's artificial reef system, but to help us inform the public about a host of marine issues impacting our region. We need volunteers to help with:

  • Reef Building, which involves a whole host of things--from being an observer for deployment operations to ferrying divers and other personnel to reef sites
  • UW Research & Monitoring through our Research Dive Team
  • UW Photography & Videography
  • Public Relations Efforts such as newsletters, display exhibits and lecture series
  • Membership Solicitation
  • The Big Bend Saltwater Classic, our major annual fund-raiser
  • Sponsorship Solicitation

To get involved, please contact OAR:

OAR Wish List

OAR is currently looking for the following items/services. In exchange for contributions OAR can offer a marketing opportunity. Please contact us if you are able to help us in our reef making efforts.

Staging Area

OAR is in need of an area to store donated concrete material. Concrete structures make great artificial reefs since concrete is very similar in composition to the natural substrate found offshore Florida. At times we have been offered smaller quantities of concrete when we are not immediately ready to deploy. Unfortunately, we have had to turn some of these opportunities down because we did not have a location to store the material. We would like an area where we could bring in quantities of concrete and store it until we are ready to make an offshore deployment. The site must provide access for barges and loading of material.
