Major Expansion to Carrabelle 10-mile Site

OAR is excited to announce that final approval was received for a major expansion of the Carrabelle 10-mile Reef area. The US Army Corps of Engineers approved the 10-year permit prepared by OAR for the City of Carrabelle to more than double this area where artificial reefs may be deployed. The new area is in 40 to 52 feet of water and adds 210 acres to the north and east of the popular Robby’s Reef, Billy’s Barge, and other previously deployed reefs. The center is located about 11 nautical miles southeast of Dog Island. The new permit will allow new structures consisting of concrete, metal, or rock up to 13 feet tall, providing a minimum of 27 feet of navigational clearance.
Said Alan Richardson, OAR Coordinator, “This permit provides OAR a greatly expanded footprint for placing reefs in one of the most popular and accessible areas for fishing and diving within our Big Bend Gulf region. Our partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies have again borne fruit, so please keep an eye on our website as we announce new reefs in this area and others.”
