Glen Peel Memorial Reef

This deployment was a memorial reef to honor the memory of Glen Peel a Wakulla county resident who was lost during a recreational diving operation offshore of Shell Point, Florida.

Capt. Jody Campbell wrote a very nice story about Glen at the time of Deployment stated below:

Glen Peel Reef Deployment Slated for Nov. 2nd

June 17, 2017 was a perfect day for diving offshore. Glen Peel, Jerry Alexander and Dan Tillman left Shell Point headed east to do some spearfishing. On the last dive of the day Dan waited for Glen and Jerry to return to the boat. The currents were very strong. Glen was behind Jerry, and Dan said he heard Glen yell, “I need help.” Dan immediately jumped in the water and swam back to help. Glen was never seen again.

Glen’s family and friends- locally spearheaded by Captain Jody Campbell- thought it would be nice to dedicate a reef offshore in Glen’s memory. He contacted the Organization for Artificial Reefs and started raising money after discussing what a suitable site would contain. Jody and Glen’s family and friends have collected the necessary funds to start a memorial reef, which will be located in the recently re-permitted marker 24 Barge Artificial Reef zone. It will be located roughly 15 miles from the #1 sea buoy out of St Marks.

Phase One of the project will involve the placement of reef and pallet balls in the coming weeks, tentatively planned for Nov. 2, 2019. Phase Two is the placement of secondary use concrete, the funding for which is from a $62,000 grant from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) Artificial Reef Program, to be deployed prior to August 2020.

Glen owned a FedEx franchise and delivered to the Crawfordville area. He was married to Alicia, whom he adored. Glen was one of those people that everyone liked. He always had a smile on his face and would help anyone. OAR and The supporters of this project hope that this memorial reef will honor that memory. OAR can be reached at [email protected]
